Slings for Babies that Love to Face Out
Lots of newborns are content to snuggle in close to mama or papa’s familiar heartbeat, blissfully unaware of the world around them. But within a few months, many babies begin to enjoy and even prefer interacting with the world at large - they want to see what you see, and experience what you experience. If this sounds like your baby, read on.
While you can adapt any baby carrier to face baby out, there are those on the market that really shine in this area … and do so in a manner that is physically comfortable for you, as well as respectful of a more natural position for baby (seated, not dangling). Baby slings that highlight your hip area are a great place to start.
Ring Slings & Pouches . For the younger baby who likes to face out, try a Buddha carry ~ place baby into the carrier in a seated position, flat on her bum with her legs crossed and her back to you. For the older baby or toddler, it’s as simple as using the carrier (instead of your arm) to hold her in place on your hip.
Rebozos. These are shorter wraps, or pieces of cloth, that can be tied in a variety of ways both adjustable (slip or sailor’s knot) or fixed (double knot) for a perfect fit every time. You can use a rebozo for the same carries you would do with a ring sling or pouch.
Mei Hip. This baby sling is a beautiful marriage between the traditional mei tai and the pouch/ring sling style carrier. It conveniently buckles into place on your hip, and comfortably cups the ball of your shoulder for a no-fuss fit. No fabric slowly creeping towards your shoulder with movement.
Hip carriers are excellent choices for young and smaller babies who wish to see out. Baby will be able to comfortably face the world from her perfect perch while feeling brave and happy, while still having that easy ability to quickly turn in to the comfort of your chest should she become scared or sad.
